Working mom tips

We’ve all heard the advice…

“Meal prep on Sunday” “Lay out your clothes the night before”

The tried and true ways to save valuable time as a working mother. Let’s agree to be real with each other for a moment. We’ve heard it, but that doesn’t mean we do it.

Sometimes I work and push all week long and when Sunday comes around, I don’t want to cook. Or I have a meeting all day and some jerk cuts me off in traffic and my child is having a tough¬†afternoon and daddy works late and its 11pm before I SIT that day. On those days, I don’t lay out my clothes. I barely lay myself in bed. This advice is for those days.

This advice is for the mornings that you don’t FULLY wake up until you are at your desk, halfway through your second cup of coffee. The mornings you get all the way to¬†work and realize you don’t have makeup on.

I know it can be tempting as a working mother to pretend we are all those “How does she do it?” women, but the truth is, something has to give. More often than not, it is care for ourselves that gets forgotten in our mad dash to be the working woman and caring mother. I’ve compiled a list of things that I have found helpful to maintain my femininity in this mad dash.

KEEP A PAIR OF BRIGHT HEELS IN YOUR CAR

This is great for many reasons. You left the house in a hurry and forgot your blazer…heels class you up. You forgot you had a high profile meeting or your shoe breaks half way to the office. There is no outfit on the planet that cannot be made fantastic by a pair of baby blue heels.

DRY NAILS QUICKER BY DUNKING FINGERS IN ICY COLD WATER

Because you finally found a moment to paint your nails and 8 fingers in, your toddler NEEDS to be picked up.

APPLY YOUR EYE MAKEUP BEFORE FOUNDATION

There is nothing worse than getting ninety percent of the way through your makeup and having your mascara wand mess up your face. I always do my eye make up first. That way, if I make a mistake, I can either cover it with my foundation, or simply wipe it off without having to start all over. Simple, but important.

SKIP THE EYES ALTOGETHER AND WEAR RED LIPSTICK

Trust me, no one will notice that you were too busy to put on eyeliner!

WASH ONLY YOUR BANGS IN THE SINK

In a perfect world, we would all wash our hair every day. But a working mother doesn’t live in a perfect world. Sometimes you fall asleep on the couch watching the cartoon that you somehow became emotionally invested in and you wake up past your alarm and MY GOD I DON’T HAVE TIME TO SHOWER! Unfortunately, we can’t all wear hats to work so in a real crunch, you can work your hair into a semi professional up-do and give your bangs a quick wash.

CHILL WINE QUICKLY BY WRAPPING IN A WET PAPER TOWEL AND PUTTING IN THE FREEZER FOR TEN MINUTES

Because, let’s face it. The answer to the question “How does she do it?” has always been “wine”.
